The Spiderwick Chronicles: The Completely Fantastical Edition

The Spiderwick Chronicles: The Completely Fantastical Edition (The Spiderwick Chronicles, #1-5) - Holly Black, Tony DiTerlizzi

This cute series about regular kids vs. magical creatures is best read back-to-back. The individual books are quite short and only deal with one or two conflicts while the main conflict is gradually built up to, with books 1-4 ending in foreshadowing of conflicts to come. The tone and reading level is probably upper middle grade rather than young adult, but there’s quite a bit of violence and the resulting trauma is only touched upon ever so lightly. There’s not much in the way of character development, which is a downside when reading the series as one book, but it’s got a classic fairy tale vibe that I quite liked. I noticed minimal typos (yay!) and I threw on an extra half star for the lovely illustrations and the extras included in the back matter (short stories and more sketches).
