Across the Universe - Beth Revis

Amy and Elder both sound about twelve years old in their intro chapters. Seriously. I did a double-take when Amy mentioned going to prom. And Elder's slang is really . . . Did any thought go into etymology? At all? We've got "shite", which has been around for centuries already, next to "frex", which is, I don't know, the illegitimate love child of "frack" and "frell" maybe? And then we've got "uni", which for the majority of English-speaking nations is short for "university", but seems in this case to be short for "universe". It's sooooo distracting. Slang should flow in context, not rip me out of the story.
