1Q84 - Haruki Murakami, Jay Rubin, Philip Gabriel

"Is it okay if I get in bed?" Fuka-Eri asked.

Normally I would see nothing wrong with the above sentence. However, nearly every time Fuka-Eri has dialogue the author makes a point of mentioning how flat and void of inflection her speech is. Her questions sound like statements and are punctuated as such. This is the first time I've noticed a question mark being used in Fuka-Eri's dialogue, and it really, really threw me to see it in there, especially since Tengo doesn't react at all. Now my brain is screaming, "Accepted pattern has been broken! Danger, Will Robinson! DANGER!!!"

Sometimes I wish I wasn't such a pedant. >.<
